Many businesses ask SEO experts these questions, believing regular SEO techniques to be enough when it comes to promotion and link building. However, the truth is that regular SEO methods, alone, cannot provide organic inbound links. To increase your backlink count, you need to involve your own resources and attract people who are closer to your business: Your Readers.
A good backlink campaign could never be effective without the involvement of the masses. Bloggers are the key to success, but usually, business owners do not see their full potential. Blog advertising is not enough, and it could turn easily into a trap if not planned and led correctly.
A simpler, more efficient method exists, a method that could easily boost not just backlinks, but also clients’ trust and enthusiasm: blogging contests.
The practice of blogging contest is more widespread between bloggers than company websites/blogs, but it can work just as well. Let’s illustrate the concept better with an example.
We have a company ABC who runs a corporate blog along with its main website. This company sells stationery material and its media staff updates the company blog often with news and ideas for its customers to know and be enthusiast about. Customers turn into good blog readers and come visit often, especially returning customers, and they leave feedback through comments and emails. Most of these customers are bloggers (which is the most widespread case, as nearly everybody on Earth has a blog nowadays) or have a social media profile.
A smart move from company ABC would be holding a blogging contest on its blog, offering digital prizes to its customers in exchange of a mention or review on their blogs, the placing of a banner on their profile, the referral of their friends or some kind of specific feedback (suggestions on a new logo design, recycled paper yes or no, etc.). Prizes offered could be like online services such like blog hosting, freebies, e-books, guides, coupons.
Company ABC would set a 30 days deadline: less than that is not recommended for two reasons, one being search engines getting suspicious at the sudden burst of backlinks, and secondly because customers are busy people too.
An Exemplar Strategy
More importantly, backlinks should look (and be) natural, so do not suggest keywords for the links: let your customers have the last word on that matter. Obviously, if you notice any of them using spam terms, it’s advisable to contact them and ask them to change the anchor text, motivating your request.
Links and Prizes
Prizes work may take extra time and energy, but think of the results: writing a few page e-book is nothing in comparison with the flow of natural backlinks that will come from the contest!
To end: plan your contest ahead, setup your prizes, send email/social media messages to your customers, and let them do the remainder. Genuine links will start flowing days afterward.
