What to Know About Reddit?

Reddit is a social media site that has been around since 2005. It has been dubbed a “news site,” although don’t visit Reddit with the expectations of catching up on that latest New York Times style news– this is news as dictated by users.

The democratic approach to turning an article into front page of Reddit news allows users to vote on different articles they come across online or on the Reddit website, catapulting only the best (or most controversial, hilarious, or whatever else is tickling the fancy of users on a given day) to the front page. Reddit can also be searched like a social media search engine, connecting users with the information they want based on how much other people enjoyed it.

Who uses Reddit and What to Know About Reddit?

Lots of people. In 2011, Reddit reported over one billion views in a month.

It is not uncommon for the front page articles to have between 1700-2000 votes, as well as hundreds (possibly thousands) of comments. Reddit readership is exponential, meaning a Reddit user will find something on the Reddit site, post it to their Facebook page, get a billion more like and shares, and so on.

This means people are seeing the Reddit material, even if they aren’t a Reddit user.

Is Reddit more than just Funny Memes?

If you’ve heard of Reddit, there is a good chance it has to do with memes. These are the funny collections of photos about “awkward moments,” or “too trues,” or “relocatable”, and many, many more. In fact, you could spend months reading through memes and the only part of you that would get tired is your mouth and stomach from laughing so hard.

But yes, Reddit is about much more than just memes. While memes and cat photos typically do show up on the front page of the site, it is also filled with real news, politics, controversy, arts, and more.

How can Reddit Help You?

Whether you are a business owner, a blogger, or just someone trying to build a brand for themselves online, Reddit is a great social media tool. Here are some ways Reddit can help you:

  1. it is much more difficult than twitter/facebook because Reddit will put a block on you if you only submit your own articles, which is kinda lame

  2. Hy Irfan,
This post is an eye opener. I never gave attention to reddit. Truth is Facebook, Twitter and Likedin are sweeping almost everything on the social medial landscape. 2005 till date is quite an age for reddit to gain grounds. I’m going to give it a chance on my list and see how it goes. Thanks for sharing

  3. Shalu Sharma says:

I haven’t used Reddit although I have an account over there. I am now considering to use it more often along with other similar sites. But then sometimes they block you for submitting your own.

  4. It is really tough working on reddit if you are SEO, from the recent post of Mashable i got to know websites such as The Atlantic and Businessnewsweek have also been banned from It..!

  5. I use Reddit for a social bookmarking site through tribe syndication. After reading your article, I can see how there are more advantages to engaging in Reddit.

    Thanks for the tips!

  6. I have signed up with Reddit long ago, but never used it to get traffic, Maybe because I don’t really like it. I think I should give sometime to Reddit and try it ones again.

  7. I use Reddit, but I can’t say that I get a lot of traffic from it. I try to post my new blogs to my SEO_Blog in Reddit. I guess as of now I’m just benefitting from the back link.
